ROTARY YEAR 1998-99
HIGHLIGHT OF THE IMPORTANT ACTIVITIES
Nursing Training
We have imparted Nursing training to three girls from the disadvantaged section of our community free for six months. Deserving girls were given jobs in Deep Nursing Home in Chandigarh.
Matching Grant Project
A US$ 4000 Matching grant project with Rotary Club of Wilmette, Illinois, USA, District 6400. was sanctioned by the Rotary Foundation. Under this project we have trained handicapped persons, especially children affected with polio and people from economically disadvantaged section of our community in Computer Skills with the objective of assisting them in securing gainful employment.
Paul Harris Sustaining Members
As against the target of making three Paul Harris Sustaining Members, we have made nine. They are: Rtns Tejinder Singh, Dharinder Tayal, S.S. Sodhi, Ann Sumati Sabhlok, Sandeep Luthra, Dr. G.S. Kochhar, Dr. S.C. Pandhi and Tarlochan Singh.
Paul Harris Fellow
Rtn. Colonel Harsharan Singh Sandhu has been made a PHF this year.
Rotary Foundation contribution
A sum of US$ 1456.49 (Rs 61172) has been contributed during the Rotary year.
Raja Saboo Endowment Fund
We have contributed Rs 3100 for this fund.
Booklet For New Members
To ensure that all new members receive proper orientation, a booklet was written by our President Rtn. Prithi Vohra. This is presented to new Rotarians on induction.
Special Olympics
Distribution of Food for over 300 mentally handicapped children for three days was organised on the occasion of Special Olympics held in Chandigarh by All India Special Olympics Association, New Delhi
Honours and Awards
- Our Charter President Rtn. Col. Harsharan Singh Sandhu has been elected on the Nominating Committee related to the selection of DG for the year 2001-2002.
- We were presented the banner on being the best club in Distt. 3080 regarding highest per capita contribution to the Rotary Foundation during the year 1997-98.
- RI Presidents citation for outstanding Club Participation in all avenues of service.
- DG’s Special award for serving the community with distinction
- DG’s special recognition for performance par excellence for prompt payment of Distt. Dues
- DG’s Award for excellent leadership as Secretary to Rtn. Sandeep Luthra
- DG’s Award for ascending the path of service for preparing a project on Computer Training to the handicapped
- DG’s Award recognising the excellent services rendered by PP Rtn. Himesh Sabhlok as GGR
- DG’s Award recognising the excellent services rendered by PP Rtn. Sneh Popli in arranging the training programme at the Distt Assembly
- DG’s Special citation for R’Anne Guddi Vohra for perfect attendance at District Functions with her supportive Perspective in steering Rotary from dream to achievement.
- Best Rotarian of our club for the year award was presented to Rtn. Tajinder Singh.
- Best R’Ann of our club for the year award was given to R’Ann Jatinder Ji.
- Our Club got the honour of having five Rotarians as District Officers.
Orphanage
We adopted an Orphanage Bal Niketan.. Free distribution of clothes and food was under taken. Children’s day on November 14, 1998 was also celebrated with them.
A deep freeze costing over Rs 10,000 was also donated to the Orphanage.
Help to Handicapped
We sponsored 11 handicapped persons from the weaker section of our community to NEVEDAC Prosthetic Centre, Chandigarh for free tricycles, wheel chairs, hearing aids and artificial limbs and appliances.
Book Donation
Over 300 books on various subjects were donated to a community Library in New Delhi. This Library has been established in the locality, which is mostly inhabited by educated lower middle class people. With the cost of books what it is today, the Library is very popular with all the age groups.
Welfare Ex Servicemen
We have assisted ex servicemen whose pension has been revised by the Government recently in not only providing the required forms to the aged veterans but filling them as well. More than 25,000 ex servicemen in various districts of Punjab were given the required forms along with a copy of Government letter sanctioning the enhanced pension.
We are happy to report that we assisted a 104 years old ex-serviceman in this project who retired from Army in 1939.
Adoption of Villages
We have adopted Villages Jayanti Majri and Chotti Perch. The main thrust of this project is to point the community towards attaining self reliance through education, training, health/nutrition and economic uplift. We have conducted health camps and Hepatitis vaccinations till now.
A project Report under 3H programme has already been approved by our foreign partner and is under scrutiny with the trustee at the Rotary Foundation.
Children opportunity Grant
We have been sanctioned US$ 25,000 under Children opportunity grant announced by the Rotary Foundation to carry out restorative surgery for birth defects in respect of 50 children as a result of Project report submitted by us.
Most of the doctors being Rotarians, have been associated with this project, which has been adopted for the first time in this part of the country by any NGO.
